We're hard at work finally, putting the new site look up, and making sure all the content is fresh and newly updated. Please bear with us over the next week or two if you find something missing or a broken link or two. We are working hard to get caught up so if something doesn't work right today, please check back tomorrow!
If you're looking around for a few of the sections we had before, I'm sorry to say that some of them are just plain gone. I decided it was time to narrow the focus of the site a bit to make sure we can really do a good job of covering the things we kept around. We were getting a little thin before, trying to offer something for everyone. We've got a new sitemap here though, so you can see all the sections.
Scientists say life began in the Earths' seas. Maybe that's why man has always felt such a strong attachment to the water. Maybe it's because navigating on the water gives us a last chance to go our own way, free of the restrictions of the asphalt. I'm not sure exactly the reason, but I understand the sirens song of the water. Check out how we feed the need to float...
In these days of economic doom and gloom, there is still one wonderful activity that you can do with very minimal impact on the family budget. Take your kids camping! Sit around the campfire and tell them a story, get them out in the mountains at night and show them that the stars are still up there! We've got a lot of ideas and places in this section...
You know the thrill of feeling the tug on the line. It doesn't matter if that line is strung through a fly rod or a deep sea trolling rod, the thrill of fishing is always the same. Are you sitting there at work reading this but your mind is out on the water somewhere? Ours too...
It's the most fun you can have going slow. Try to explain the thrill involved in airing down, gearing down and crawling down a trail to someone who has never tried it, and you'll most likely get a blank stare. But strap them in the passenger seat and take them off road, and chances are good that you'll have a convert on your hands at the end of the day...
If you've ever been to Utah, and spent any time exploring the southern end of the state, you'll understand the term
"Redrock Country". We are blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery in the nation here, plenty of it that
is accessible to everyone, and some of the best of it that can only be enjoyed by working a bit to get off the beaten
path.
As we tried to come up with a name for this site, since we're all about having fun outdoors, and our favorite place to do that is the Redrock country, the name Redrock Outdoors seemed a natural fit. This is our place for all the stuff we know about all the things we love to do. We'll be keeping you posted on new gear, great places to visit and our message forum will be your place to connect with others and share your own experiences and expertise. We hope you'll enjoy your visit here and that you'll come back often.
The wonderful thing about the web is that we can bestow these titles on ourselves. Editor, Blogger, Expert... And
who's to argue? I've always wanted a title, and so I give myself the title of Editor of Redrock Outdoors. Heady stuff
this!
Ok, ok, I'll come back down off my pedestal now. I suppose though you have to call me something. How about "Guy who started the site"... That'll do. Now that we're formally introduced, let's get on with the fun. I love all the stuff we cover hear. I grew up camping and crawling along dirt roads with my family, my Dad was always taking us on adventures. We searched out old abandoned mines, explored caves and once in a while we'd head off in search of an old airplane crash site that was mapped out on his Civil Air Patrol maps.
My fondest memories come from the trips where he would be driving down the highway, spot an interesting dirt road heading off into the mountains and just turn off and go exploring. We didn't take trips to Disneyland when I was a kid, but I don't think I missed a thing.
Now that I'm a Parent, I am trying hard to give my kids some of those same types of memories. Things have changed a lot since I was a kid, the dirt roads are fewer and farther between, but we still manage to find the odd spontaneous adventure to chase down. I hope you do the same for you kids, I hope you get them out to see the natural world before it all gets paved over. My efforts with this site will be to help you plan some adventures of your own. When we discover some hidden gem of adventure, we'll share it with you. All that we ask is you treasure it, share it with your kids, and leave it the way you found it when you're done.
So poke around here, enjoy yourself. Try to find something you didn't know about, or head over to the Message Forum and share your favorite gem with us. Together, we'll make sure our kids don't spend their entire lives glued to a TV or Video Game! Let's get them out where they can get dirty!
