Mountain Biking
is one of those sports that has literally exploded over the past
decade or so. Manufacturers are using high-tech materials
to create lighter, stronger bikes and the sport is opening up to
more and more people. We count ourselves lucky to live
just a few hours away from Moab, Utah, home of some of the
worlds best slick rock biking. We try to get there as
often as we can, but even when we can't go to Moab, there is
still a ton of good biking in the Wasatch Mountains.

A while back, a good friend
and I were reminiscing on a trip we took to St. George, Utah a few years back. I had
started mountain biking just a few months before the trip, and one of my first outings
with this friend had been a somewhat humiliating experience for me. I had been badly
out of shape, and worse, very timid of the bike. A gently sloping dirt road had me
riding my brakes and biting my lip with fear of crashing.
I'm happy to say that a few months later I was a totally different rider for our trip to
St. George. We had discovered a great dry streambed near a golf course, and as we
worked our way up it I was thrilled to find myself keeping up with my friend, and better
yet, even making a reasonably good showing of handling my bike through the cactus and
rocks. (Ok, I did do one particularly elegant over the handlebars face plant, but
no more than that.) The thing that the memory of those trips brings to mind most of
all for me, is the remarkable affect that mountain biking can have on the body and spirit.
But then, I guess you all know that already, which is the reason you enjoy this
sport.

Since Mountain Biking is a
very physically demanding sport, one of the things we wanted to focus on as a getting
started action item is getting oneself in shape. Now we know how hard this is,
particularly with the frantic pace of life these days, and we also know how hard it can be
to get yourself motivated or to know that you're doing the right things as you workout.
