Flaming
Gorge is the place we turn to when it gets too hot to go south
to Lake Powell. The lake sits at just over 6000 ft.
elevation, so the weather stays pretty moderate. The
cool, clear, deep lake produces some monster fish, including
the State record Lake Trout at 51 pounds, German Brown Trout
over 30 pounds and Rainbow Trout over 25 pounds!
|
| The
lake was created in 1962 when the Flaming Gorge dam was
built. It's 91 miles long, and covers 42,000
acres. The Green River just below the dam is one of the
most populated rivers in the United States, with fish
populations being reported as high as 22,000 per river
mile! There is some debate going on right now
regarding these two fisheries, the Gorge itself and the Green
River below it. Some Environmentalist organizations,
including the Glen
Canyon Action Network are calling for the decommisioning
of several Dams along the Colorado River drainage, and Flaming
Gorge Dam is one of the dams they think needs to be pulled
down. For more on this, visit our Land
Use Issues section. |
