I am a very firm
believer that your mind and mental state plays an enormous role
in controlling your physical state. This section is
devoted to helping you get your mental house in order so that
you're not undermining your efforts to keep your physical body in shape.

Again, in the
interest of helping you live life well, take a few minutes to
give some thought to the power of the mind as it relates to
everyday life. The human mind has the potential to do just
about anything with the human body. We've all seen people
who have developed dramatic abilities to control their bodies,
and I'm not talking about magicians and mystics here, I'm
talking about people who use mind and body conditioning to
perform verified feats of personal endurance that the rest of us
can't imagine. Take Free
Diving for instance. Free divers plunge to incredible
depths, enduring massive pressure, just holding their
breath. How do they control their bodies so that they can
perform these feats of endurance? I believe that the most
critical skill they must develop is mental endurance and
control.

Look at the most successful people you've met, or the people
who are in the best shape, and I think you'll find that the
thing they have in common is most often a positive state of
mind. Some people set goals and work constantly to reach
them, other's simply practice positive "self talk"
to keep themselves healthy and happy as they pass down life's
road. I've personally witnessed the amazing power of
self talk, as I've watched a person very close to me suffer
through a very self-destructive time in life, driven mostly by
negative self talk. I've witnessed first hand the way
negative thoughts translate themselves into a sort of
self-fulfilling prophecy. Through this, I've come to
believe that your life is what you believe it will be.
If you go through life setting mental limits, saying to
yourself "I could never be successful", "I'll
probably wind up getting cancer", or other self-defeating
types of things, you will wind up finding ways to prove
yourself right. And conversely, I've seen time and time
again in both my own life and the lives of the most
successful, happy people I've met that if you say to yourself
"I'm on my way to success in life", or "I feel
healthy, and I'm getting healthier by the minute" your
mind will also find a way to make those statements come true. |

People spend
millions of dollars each year in the pursuit of a pill that
will make them happy or "cure" their depression, but
I think that they are defeating themselves largely by
believing that the cure for their problems lies outside
themselves. I think if they dedicated themselves to
focusing their efforts internally first, they might discover
that they held the ultimate power in their own minds, the
power to heal themselves without the use of
chemicals. One book that can teach you how to
harness the incredible power of the mind is "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind",
and if you only read one book in your life that you consider
to be in the "self help" category, this should be
it. If you have time for more than one book
on this subject, another gem is "Self-Help Stuff That
Works". This one is written in a clear, easy to
read and easy to implement format that you'll find yourself
returning to time and time again as you get yourself on the
road to living a better life. |
