 - Hang Gliders -

Hang gliding has a somewhat checkered past as far as the ultralight flight arena goes.  Some of the first kites were poorly designed and easily crashed.  A good friend of ours got into and out of hang gliding in the course of an afternoon.  He and another friend had pooled their resources to purchase a used hang glider, and then had arranged to meet with an instructor for a day of flight training.  The instructor was going to demonstrate with a short flight, took off and only seconds later crashed the kite, injuring himself slightly and totally destroying the kite.

As I said, the total experience of getting into and out of hang gliding lasted just short of an afternoon.  These days however, improvements in both construction and training makes Hang Gliding one of the safer unpowered flight methods.  We happen to be lucky here in Utah, we've got one of the premier hang and para gliding locations in the United States right here in our back yard.  The "Point of the Mountain Flight Park" is located on the south end of the Salt Lake valley, on a point that extends out into the valley.  The unique location of this point provides for excellent flight conditions on most days of the year.  There is a northern and a southern exposure to the point, and so pilots can launch and fly from whichever side happens to be getting the favorable winds on any given day
