Paraplanes combine the parafoils used in paragliding with a powerplant typical of what's found in many fixed wing ultralight aircraft.  The result is a safe, fun, easy to fly powered parachute.

I learned to fly a paraplane at Bonneville Seabase near Grantsville, Utah.  The class is an interesting process, roughly half of it in the form of "ground school" and the other half actual flying.  I do have to tell you about the particular "ground school" that we attended.  The first required part of the school consists of each student sitting in front of a video tape being played of a lawyer who very cleary explains that the sport you are about to enter into is dangerous, foolhardy, deadly, likely to kill or maim you, etc., and that no matter what happens, you can't sue anyone because you assume all risk yourself and if you die doing this, the lawyers will show the tape to the courts to show that you were informed before you started that you could die doing this and therefore your heirs cannot get any restitution from anyone.  It's unfortunate that our lawsuit happy society has brought us to this point, but that's the way it is these days.
